Recent studies show that over the past year “Americans have rejiggered their lives to elevate experiences over things”. The study suggests Americans are spending less time buying nonessentials and more time taking part in “experience consumption”*.

Museums on the Connecticut Art Trail offer a host of affordable experiences for couples and families. In addition to the museums listed above where admission is always free, the following museums offer admission from $3/adult to $10/adult, but are FREE on certain days.

• Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Ridgefield. Free every Tuesday
• Florence Griswold Museum, Old Lyme. Free Saturday, May 1, 2010
• Hill-Stead Museum, Farmington. Grounds, including the c.1920 Sunken Garden and 152 acres with 3 miles of trails that include part of the MMM Trail System, are free to the publicdaily, open 7:30 am-5:30 pm.
• Lyman Allyn Art Museum, New London. Free first Sunday of each month. Free anytime to New London residents (must show ID)
• Mattatuck Museum Arts and History Center, Waterbury. Under age 16 are free. Free Museum Sundays are offered on the second Sunday of every month
• New Britain Museum of American Art, New Britain. Free every Saturday 10-Noon
• Slater Memorial Museum, Norwich Free Academy Campus, Norwich. Free on exhibition opening reception days
• Bruce Museum, Greenwich. Free on Tuesdays 10-5
• Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, Hartford. Free the last Saturday of every month from 10-1 with free programming in conjunction. Free to all Bank of America cardholders first Saturday of every month through April 2010, per Museums on Us program. Free to Hartford students (grades K-12). Free Juneteenth Celebration Saturday, June 12, 2010. Most evening lectures are free and open to the public.
